As political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of future elections, party leaders are placing greater emphasis on unity and internal democracy. Against this backdrop, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has appealed to aspirants participating in the National Delegates Conference (NDC) National Executive Committee (NEC) elections to accept the outcome of the process and work together for the growth of the party.

Speaking ahead of the announcement of results, Obi stressed the importance of maintaining peace before, during, and after the exercise. He noted that every election naturally produces winners and losers, but what matters most is the ability of members to remain committed to the larger goals of the party. According to him, leadership positions are temporary, while the responsibility of building a strong political movement remains a collective task.

The former Anambra State governor encouraged aspirants and their supporters to conduct themselves in a mature and responsible manner. He said disagreements are normal in politics, but such differences should not be allowed to create divisions within the party. Obi added that political parties become stronger when members respect democratic processes and support those who emerge victorious through fair competition.

He also urged party officials to ensure that the election process remains transparent and credible. According to him, confidence in the outcome can only be achieved when members believe that the exercise was conducted fairly. He emphasized that trust in internal elections is important because it helps strengthen the party’s image and prepares it for future political contests.

Political observers say Obi’s message comes at a crucial time, as disputes over party elections have often led to crises in several political organisations across the country. Many parties have struggled with internal conflicts arising from contested results, sometimes leading to court cases and defections. By encouraging aspirants to accept the outcome of the election, Obi appears to be promoting stability and cooperation within the party at a time when unity is needed most.

Obi’s call for acceptance of election results highlights an important principle of democracy. Political competition should not end in bitterness or division. While every aspirant hopes to win, respecting the outcome of a credible process helps strengthen institutions and build public confidence. If political leaders continue to promote unity after elections, parties will be better positioned to serve their members and the wider public effectively.
