Concerns are rising across Nigeria as many political observers warn that the country’s democracy could be at risk due to the increasing dominance of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress. Critics believe the growing influence of the APC may weaken opposition parties and reduce political competition in the country.

In recent months, more politicians from opposition parties have continued to defect to the APC, giving the ruling party stronger control in several states and political institutions. Some Nigerians fear this trend could gradually lead to a one-party system, where one political group holds too much power over national affairs.

Political analysts say democracy works best when there is healthy competition among parties. They warn that if opposition voices become too weak, citizens may lose the chance to hear different ideas and opinions during elections. Some civil society groups have also called for stronger democratic institutions to protect fairness and accountability in governance.

Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999 after years of military leadership. Since then, the country has operated a multi-party system that allows different political parties to contest elections. However, debates about political imbalance and abuse of power have remained common over the years.

Despite the criticism, supporters of the APC argue that the party’s growing popularity is a result of public support and successful political strategies. They insist that Nigerians still have the freedom to choose their leaders through elections.
