The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has publicly pushed back against what it describes as growing attempts to link its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, with Nigeria’s current political leadership. The church’s response comes after weeks of discussions and comments on social media, where some critics questioned the respected cleric’s relationship with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
For years, Pastor Adeboye has remained one of Nigeria’s most influential religious leaders, attracting millions of followers within and outside the country. However, recent online narratives have suggested that he has become too close to those in power. In response, RCCG said enough was enough, insisting that many of the claims being circulated do not reflect the truth and are aimed at creating a false impression about the church and its leader.
According to the church, Pastor Adeboye has always maintained a non-partisan position despite regularly praying for leaders in government. RCCG explained that offering prayers for elected officials should not be interpreted as political support or endorsement. Church officials stressed that the pastor’s role is to provide spiritual guidance and pray for peace, stability, and progress in the nation, regardless of which political party is in power.
The church also expressed concern over the way some individuals have used selected photos, videos, and public appearances to push what it called misleading narratives. RCCG noted that as a prominent religious figure, Pastor Adeboye often meets people from different backgrounds, including politicians, business leaders, and traditional rulers. It argued that such interactions are normal and should not automatically be seen as evidence of political alignment.
Meanwhile, the church urged members of the public to be careful about information shared online, especially content that could damage reputations without proof. It maintained that Pastor Adeboye’s focus remains on spiritual matters, humanitarian work, and national unity. RCCG added that it would continue encouraging peaceful coexistence and prayers for the country during challenging times, rather than engaging in political battles.
This issue matters because religious leaders play an important role in Nigerian society, and public perception can influence how millions of people view national events. When allegations involving respected figures emerge, they often generate strong reactions from both supporters and critics. As a result, the church’s response is likely to remain part of ongoing discussions about the relationship between faith, leadership, and politics in Nigeria.
RCCG’s decision to address the matter directly shows that the church believes the narratives have grown serious enough to require a public response. While public figures will always face scrutiny, claims that affect their reputation should be based on facts rather than assumptions. Ultimately, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the debate fades away or continues to attract attention in the coming weeks.
